Flexible packaging considerations
for the soil packaging market

While some consumers may consider yardwork a chore, other’s take the health and appearance of their greenspace very seriously – their lawns and gardens are a reflection of the pride they feel in their home. This varying level of consumer interest in yard care has impacted the premiumization of lawn and garden products and packaging.

We asked Maria Halford, vice president of sales for ProAmpac’s lawn and garden products, for some insights into the changing soil and fertilizer packaging market.

Question:  What are some important factors for flexible packaging companies to consider when developing packaging for soil?

Maria Halford:  There are a few critical aspects to consider that may not be obvious at first glance.  For starters, soil is often stored and sold outdoors, subjecting the film to high levels of sun as well as the potential for high moisture.  As a result, the packaging must be able to withstand high moisture conditions and the ink systems must be fade-resistant.  High-strength beaded side seals and high-quality film make the package robust - withstanding not only the weight but the storage conditions.  From the consumer looking to get the job done quicky to the discerning gardener - no one wants the package to break open unexpectedly.

Durability and performance are paramount, not just for the end package but also for the efficiency of the brand’s film. High-performance film should run fast on filling machines and offer low-defect rates which optimizes manufacturing efficiencies for brand owners, ultimately saving time, money and product waste.

Q:  Are consumers concerned with sustainable packaging for lawn & garden products?

Maria:  Absolutely.  Sustainability is something that many consumers are looking for across markets.  However, the product inside will impact the recyclability of the packaging.  If recyclability is not an option ProAmpac offers other sustainable packaging solutions such as ProActive Renewable and ProActive post-consumer recycled (PCR) rollstock, bags and pouches. Utilizing plant-based resins instead of fossil-fuel polyethylene, ProActive Renewable films are mono-material structures that provide durability and performance.  Also, adding PCR content is another way of increasing the sustainability characteristics of a brand’s packaging without sacrificing quality.

Q:  How does ProAmpac help lawn & garden customers get the most out of their brand?

Maria:  ProAmpac offers heavy duty bags with high quality graphics that differentiate brands and target consumers in the home and garden center.  The quality and care ProAmpac invest in our North American based manufacturing, ensures product filled bags hold up during the entire logistics process. Brands can have confidence that their product will remain intact all the way through to the consumer’s backyard.  With UV and water-based inks that withstand the environmental rigors of outside displays, these bags will stay bright and colorful with high quality graphics giving specialty soil and fertilizers shelf differentiation.  Our Signature Surfaces sensory packaging offers a tactile experience for consumers and allow brands to stand out.

Q:  Do consumers make their buying decisions based on emotions?

Maria:  Yes, according to Harvard professor Gerald Zaltman in his book, “How Customers Think: Essential Insights into the Mind of the Market”, 95% of purchasing decisions are subconscious even though the consumer thinks they put all rational thought into their decisions.  Color is usually the first thing that grabs the attention of the consumer, so making sure your logo or the graphics stand out is important.  Brand loyalty is a large consideration, especially in lawn care.  People who are passionate about their yards, gardens and flowers want products and packaging that represents the quality time they put into making their yards beautiful.

Q:  Any final thoughts?

Maria:  In summary, brands should be seeking out flexible packaging providers that provide high quality film that performs well on their machines, offer sustainable alternatives to traditional films and has the print quality to make their package pop off the shelf and appeal to consumers.
